The DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, located near Boston in Lincoln, MA is seeking a Preparator/Associate Preparator (title at time of hire dependent on experience). The Preparator is part of a museum team responsible for the installation and maintenance of art in the galleries and within a 35-acre sculpture park.
The Preparator works closely with the Chief Preparator, artists, the museum registrar and curators in the planning and installation of museum exhibitions.
Specific Duties:
- Assists in planning, layout and design of exhibitions.
- Fabricates all exhibition furniture: platforms, pedestals partitions, walls and vitrines.
- Mounts or installs exhibition related graphics.
- Orders and maintains installation related materials and tools.
- Designs and implements gallery lighting.
- Drives museum truck for the pickup and delivery of artwork
- Prepares works of art for travel, including building crates when necessary.
- Mats and frames artwork for museum collection and exhibitions.
- Installs and maintains outdoor sculpture.
- In conjunction with Education Department plans and designs education components of exhibitions, including Process Gallery.

Qualifications:
- B.A or B.F.A and 3 years appropriate experience.
- Manual skills and knowledge of trades.
- Familiarity with museum standards for handling and installing works of art.
- Knowledge of archival framing and matting techniques.
- Ability to communicate and coordinate installation plans with curators, artists and tradesmen.
- Must be organized as well as flexible.
Ideal candidates will have a BA/BFA, previous museum installation experience, familiarity with museum standards and procedures for arthandling and security, skill in building trades including painting, carpentry, and construction, the ability to build high-quality exhibition furniture, installation components, and crates, the ability to mat and frame works on paper, familiarity with rigging of sculpture, and excellent communication and problem-solving skills. This position requires a valid drivers license and the ability to lift heavy objects.
