Job description
Job description: The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Chicagoland Affiliate is currently seeking qualified candidates for a full time Manager of Mission Initiatives to coordinate the Affiliate’s five-county service area activities that relate to the mission of the organization, “to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease.” The Manager of Mission Initiatives is responsible for administering all aspects of the Chicagoland Affiliate’s grant making process and oversight of the Affiliate’s education and outreach programs.

Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Grantmaking – 50% of time
  • Develops, implements and maintains all grants-related policies, procedures, guidelines and materials in conjunction with the Mission Committee and consistent with the Komen Foundation’s mission, and the Affiliate’s strategic plan.
  • Serves as staff liaison to the Mission Committee.
  • Completes the bi-annual Community Needs Assessment required by Komen National in collaboration with appropriate staff and Board members.
  • Works with the Mission Committee Chair to prepare annual grant applications. Ensures distribution to all current and past grantees, and an to a continually expanding base of providers in the area of breast cancer education, screening, treatment and treatment support throughout the Affiliate’s service area.
  • Coordinates annual grant-writing workshops for prospective grantees.
  • Identifies, recommends and assists with selection of the Community Review Panel. Facilitates communication with, and orientation for, grant reviewers.
  • Processes and reviews all incoming grants according to established guidelines.
  • Schedules and coordinates Community Review Panel and Mission Committee Meeting/s in conjunction with the Mission Chair. Provides technical assistance as needed.
  • Prepares slate of approved grants for presentation to the Board of Directors.
  • Notifies approved grantees and those not selected according to established guidelines.
  • Issues grant contracts and funding according to established guidelines.
  • Coordinates and conducts site visits with grantees, Komen Mission Committee members and Board of Directors.
  • Works with Mission Committee Chair to plan and implement ongoing grantee education and networking opportunities
  • Establishes and maintains contact with current grantees. Provides resources and continuing education related to outcomes as appropriate.
  • Keeps grantees up to speed on all affiliate current events and ensures they have marketing materials for (i.e. Race for the Cure, Golf for the Cure, etc.)
  • Reviews and processes mid-year and final reports from grantees according to established guidelines and manages the grantee outcomes measurement process.

Education and Outreach Promotion – 40% of time
  • Provides general oversight of the Affiliate’s education and outreach activities, including activities targeting the medically underserved.
  • Serve as a resource for breast health services in the Affiliate service area, participates in appropriate education programs and ensure Affiliate presence at health fairs and community events throughout the year.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director and Education and Outreach Committee Chair, sets goals and objectives for education and outreach activities across the Affiliate’s five-county service area.
  • Serves as staff liaison to the Education & Outreach Committee.
  • Represents the Affiliate at meetings and events sponsored by grantee organizations, cancer-related committees and community/public entities as assigned to help maintain a working knowledge of evolving community needs.
  • Maintains current information on breast health resources available throughout the Affiliate service area. Provides office staff with the resources required to respond to inquiries from the community.

General and Other Responsibilities – 10% of time
  • Supports the Susan G. Komen Mission
  • Participates in internal staff and committee meetings as requested. Prepares reports as requested.
  • Supports Executive Director and Board of Directors with other Affiliate projects and efforts as requested.
  • Will be required to travel for training 5-10% of the time.
Req. candidate profile : Additional Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree in healthcare, business, education, social services, grants-related or other not-for profit-related field (master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum three to five years of experience in not-for-profit management.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Outstanding organizational and analytical skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Proficient computer skills, including the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Self-motivated, team player with the ability to meet deadlines, remain flexible and adjust to changing priorities.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with board members, committee chairs, affiliate staff, volunteers and the public, particularly grantees.
  • The ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends as needed to meet Affiliate needs.
  • Knowledge of breast cancer issues and the healthcare community.
