Job description: Tahirih is a Bahá’í-inspired non-profit organization that offers pro bono representation to women and girls seeking protection from such gender-based human rights abuses as domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, female genital mutilation, honor crimes, and forced marriage.

Tahirih seeks a senior-level professional with prior advocacy experience for the newly created position of IMBRA Attorney-Adviser. This position will focus on advocating for the full implementation and effective enforcement of IMBRA, and on public education and outreach to ensure greater understanding of the obligations imposed and rights afforded under IMBRA.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with Congress, government agencies, prosecutors, lawmakers and others re: implementation /enforcement of IMBRA as well as other protections for foreign brides using IMBs;
  • Inform and engage stakeholder groups to promote implementation and enforcement;
  • Serve as Tahirih’s primary liaison to the public on IMBRA and abuse/exploitation through the IMB industry; engage in public education and outreach, including to the media; and prepare public presentations and articles for publication;
  • Create advisories and other public education materials about the rights afforded and obligations imposed under IMBRA;
  • Work with advocates and embassies from other countries to promote international efforts to protect foreign brides using IMBs; and
  • Draft grant proposals and reports, as well as reports to the Board.
Req. candidate profile : Qualifications:

  • J.D. required; will alternatively consider candidates with other relevant graduate degrees or significant relevant advocacy experience
  • 2 or more years of public policy-related experience required;
  • Experience advocating on behalf of immigrant women survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking strongly preferred
  • Sincere commitment to nonpartisan principles
  • Ability to interact well with a wide range of people, from local grassroots activists to national powerbrokers, from civic associations to faith-based alliances, etc.
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and oral)
  • Sharp attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work product
  • Excellent organization and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Flexibility and a sense of humor
