Job description
Job description: Director of Communications will be responsible for working with the CEO and COO to develop the organization’s vision and plan for both new and traditional media, including using social media tools for the messaging to and mobilizing of Sojourners constituents.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Direct and oversee communications programs that effectively describe and promote the organization.
  • Suggest promotional campaign ideas in various types of media, as well as counsel top management on effective communication strategies.
  • Lead the development and implementation of approved strategies around new media such as podcasting, video-casting, and social networking; and around traditional media such as column syndication, possible radio syndication, and broadcast products.
  • Coordinate online messaging across the organization for consistency and strategic goals.
  • Increase the online list through strategic use of action alerts, blog positioning, promotional services, etc.
  • Lead media relations for CEO, including speaking events, book tours, press events, etc.
  • Lead new media business plan, including social media program.

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION:
  • Supervise, coach, and train Deputy Press Secretary, Interactive Media Producer, and Media Intern; plan and lead regular Communications Department meetings.
  • Monitor, record, analyze, and report on media results.
  • Compile the Communications Department annual budget and monitor department financial reports.
  • Participate in Senior Management Team meetings to represent communications concerns and to provide general organizational oversight.
Req. candidate profile : Additional Qualifications:
  • Ten years experience in a major media operation required, at least five years of which was in a management role.
  • Significant experience in developing and enforcing organization-wide messaging required.
  • Experience with creative development of messaging campaigns and knowledge of email list strategy development required.
  • Experience pitching op eds, interview possibilities, etc., required.
  • Experience with business planning for a media operation, including profit/loss responsibility, required.
  • Experience in new product development/new product launch required.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and tracking skills required.
  • Experience in negotiating media contracts/partnerships preferred.
  • Experience in both traditional and "new media" preferred.
  • Experience in media related to politics from the perspective of Christian faith a plus.
  • Extensive list of contacts a major plus.
  • Thorough understanding of marketing to particular demographics a plus.
  • Ability and interest in periodic travel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
