Responsibilities and Duties:
The major responsibility of the position is to support the work of PDT projects through the provision of high quality economic advice and analysis, including both quantitative analysis and policy advice. The primary types of assignments include:
Providing advice to project staff on the economic impact of project activities
Conducting research on the economic impact of international agency operations in conflict or post-conflict zones, including:
Create data collection methodologies for measuring local spending impacts in post-conflict economies, including methodologies that are robust yet appropriate to the data availability in post conflict economies
Develop methodologies for measuring impact of local procurement on different local markets (eg labour market)
Monitor (and in some cases manage) data collection exercises in the field
Developing pragmatic policy and practice recommendations for PDT clients such as international agencies or the United Nations
In addition, as the staff economist at PDT you will be responsible for a range of ongoing activities including:
Presenting and defending research in public and private for a, such as the IMF/World Bank, United Nations or development think tanks
Developing new project proposals
Organizing peer review of PDT research
Liaising with donors regarding current or proposed projects as necessary
Reporting Lines:
Reports to Projects Director in New York, with temporary reporting to specific project managers as required
Req. candidate profile :
Qualifications:
PhD in Economics or Political Economy with strong quantitative skills
Experience or studies in International Relations and/or Development Studies an asset
Experience with data collection, including developing methodologies and conducting data collection in the field
Experience working in or on post-conflict countries or fragile states
Excellent spoken and written English communications skills
Experience in conflict, post-conflict, or developing world desired, or the capacity to work in complex and difficult environments
