South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!) is New York City’s only youth development organization with the cultural competencies to address the needs and concerns of South Asian youth. SAYA! conducts its youth programming out of its Elmhurst youth center, as well as select public schools throughout Queens. SAYA!’s programs include academic counseling and tutoring; SAT and college preparation; young women’s leadership development; co-ed community organizing and leadership development; mental health and truancy counseling; and sports, arts and recreational programming.
Responsible for a wide variety of responsibilities and tasks including:
- Establish and maintain relationships with outside agents/organizations/schools in the community
- Recruit, interview, and hire staff to assist with outreach project and plans
- Collaborate with Program Director and the Volunteer Coordination AmeriCorps* VISTA member
- Create and maintain data and reports, like personnel records, budgets, training manuals and project goals
- Research and analyze community needs to appropriately determine program goals and vision
- Speak and associate with community groups/organizations to explain and interpret organizations purposes and policies
- Represent organization with governmental and media institutions
- Report program plans, strategies and guidelines.

Qualifications:
Ideal candidate would be interested in non-profit organizations, the South Asian community, and outreach development. The individual would have experience in the social sciences, excellent written and oral comprehension; knowledgeable social perceptiveness, critical thinking, and prime research skills; outstanding speech clarity and written/oral expression. Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Additional Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age or older upon entering AmeriCorps* VISTA placement.
- Must be a US Citizen or a Permanent Resident Alien.
- Must take an oath of office upon enrollment into service.
- Must be in a position to offer full-time service for a period of one year without regard to regular working hours.
- To the maximum extent practicable, must be willing to live among, and at the economic level of, the people served.
- Must complete the entire PSO (Pre Service Orientation) in order to become an AmeriCorps* VISTA.
