Programs for school groups at the National Building Museum explore the people, the processes, and the materials that create buildings and places. School programs meet local and national standards of learning and provide students with an awareness of the built environment through hands-on design education based activities.
Primary Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the school & youth groups coordinator are to lead and manage the school & youth groups team, evaluate and revise existing programming, and develop new curriculum. In addition to teaching the programs as needed, this position represents the Museum at education conferences and in local school districts promoting and marketing the Museum’s youth groups programs. As a key member of the youth education team, the position collaborates on the development of youth programming, at times including exhibition components appropriate for school and youth audiences. The school & youth groups coordinator reports to the director of youth education. S/he directly supervises a full-time associate school & youth groups coordinator, a full-time assistant school & youth groups coordinator, and several part-time Museum teachers who report to the associate coordinator.
Req. candidate profile :
The ideal candidate should have:
A graduate degree in museum education, teaching, or a field related to design or design education (relevant professional experience can be substituted for this degree requirement);
Proven supervisory and management skills;
Three or more years successful experience creating and writing curriculum and managing programs for school and youth audiences, preferably in a museum environment;
A demonstrated skill in teaching young people of different ages;
Budget management skills;
Strong written and oral communication skills; and
Knowledge of the built environment and scouting a plus.
Additional Qualifications:
An ability to simultaneously balance multiple projects in a fast-paced environment is essential. Since some program activities occasionally take place on weekend or after normal working hours during weekdays, the position must have a flexible schedule.
