The Senior Accountant performs a variety of complex tasks in general areas of accounting. Responsibilities include monthly financial reporting, recording income from various sources, and the preparation of investment and bank reconciliations on a monthly basis.
Job Responsibilities:
- Prepares monthly bank and investment reconciliations.
- Prepares journal entries, i.e.: payroll, investments, cash accounts, intercompany allocations.
- Prepares worksheet analysis and journal entry for union and non-union payroll.
- Prepares monthly account analysis.
- Prepares worksheets and entries related to Direct Mail and other General Donations, working in conjunction with the Director of Direct Marketing and Internet Relations.
- Responsible for the proper reporting of revenue received from online donations and the ASPCA Merchandise Store.
- Assists in month end closing.
- Prepares the Restricted Fund Schedule on a quarterly basis.
- Reviews the online daily banking activity, noting any wire transfers received or irregular transactions.
- Reviews the daily online activity of the Merrill Lynch account, noting any stock donations and calculates the stock value for general posting.
- Researches outstanding (unpresented) checks which may be stale dated and make reasonable attempts to contact the payee in an effort to reissue.
- Assists in and reviews the physical inventory count for Office Services and the Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital.
- Investigates customer’s credit card disputes and potential chargeback’s; provides relevant documentation.
- Drafts policies and procedures as requested by the Controller.
- Reconciles the quarterly payroll tax reporting - Form 941.
- Assists with the year-end audit, providing schedules and worksheets.
- Interacts with financial institutions and credit card companies.
- Provides backup, as required, for Union and Non-Union Payroll.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. Advanced degree a plus.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in accounting or auditing.
Knowledge Requirements:
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting and financial principles and controls for audit compliance.
- Must have analytical experience with a high proficiency in mathematics and interpreting financial data.
Skills Requirements:
- High degree of proficiency in the use of financial software applications including: Excel, Lotus 123, and Word. Knowledge of MAS90 a plus.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly express thoughts to others and exchange information.
- Must be detail-oriented and be able to work in a meticulous, thorough, and detailed manner.
- Must possess the ability to assume non-routine tasks and to take initiative where appropriate.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to handle highly sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality.
