Job description
Job description: Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) is working with both funders and nonprofit organizations nationwide to change the way nonprofits are financed. The goal of this innovative thinking is to create a nonprofit sector that has the financial strength needed to provide excellent services to the community.

The Portfolio Manager is responsible for the management of all aspects of NFF’s diverse loan portfolio throughout the nation. As an important member of a close-working team of local and national professionals, the Portfolio Manager will monitor, analyze, re-evaluate and restructure loans, as well as provide client organizations with technical assistance and financial analysis. This role requires creative structuring and resourceful partnership development to succeed in meeting the financing needs of the nonprofit sector.

Specific responsibilities:

Loan Portfolio Management:

Manage the portfolio of 200 loans to nonprofits throughout the nation. Loans are up to $2 million (average $400,000) for everything from small equipment and working capital to major capital projects. After loan approval and closing, supervise disbursements and billing and monitor the portfolio, ensuring timely evaluation of client financial condition, organization trends, collateral coverage and client’s repayment ability.
Responsibilities include: managing delinquencies to an acceptable level; ensuring that risk ratings and lines of credit extensions are evaluated on a timely basis; and, restructuring and renegotiating loans when necessary. The position requires close coordination with both site management and Financial Services personnel as well as excellent client management skills.

Communication and Reporting:

Communicate to Financial Services and other staff about the quality of the portfolio, and portfolio trends. Prepare and assist in preparation of reports for both external and internal purposes.

Technical Assistance:

Monitor and proactively work with loan portfolio clients to evaluate their overall financial health and improve performance. Identify appropriate financial solutions which meet client needs and protect NFF’s capital.

Risk Management:

Contribute to the development and refinement of NFF’s procedures and policies to enhance efficiency and minimize credit and operational risk. Participate in setting adequate loan loss reserves.

Internal and External Relations:

Maintain a culture of quality customer service at all points of contact with NFF clients, Financial Services team, the outsourced loan servicer and other staff and professionals As needed, cultivate relationships with banks and other local financial intermediaries who are lending partners and represent NFF in public forums.
Req. candidate profile : Qualifications:

  • At least five years, and preferably 7-10 years, of direct corporate or nonprofit lending or loan portfolio management experience, ideally in commercial banking or with another CDFI.
  • Experience in restructuring troubled loans a plus.
  • Excellent financial analysis skills, with outstanding attention to detail and familiarity with nonprofit accounting
  • Management experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the nonprofit community
  • Exceptional written and oral communications and interpersonal skills
  • Strong time-management, multi-tasking and organizational abilities
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a close-knit group
  • Flexibility, creativity, and patience, with imagination, enthusiasm and a sense of humor
  • Ability to take initiative and focus on results
  • An openness to learning new skills and systems, with an entrepreneurial work ethic
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Interest and ability to travel locally year round with occasional national travel
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; Master’s preferred in business, finance, public administration, or related field
