The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is a private non-profit corporation that works to foster and promote sustainable technologies and systems, especially for the benefit of economically disadvantaged individuals and communities. NCAT is seeking a program specialist to help U.S. farmers and ranchers learn about sustainability and organic horticulture production. The position will work directly with farmers to address their questions on crop production, how to transition to organics as well as how to add value and market their products. This is a regular, full-time position providing an excellent opportunity to work with a dedicated and professional staff on national projects. The position will be based in either NCAT’s Fayetteville, Arkansas or Butte, Montana office.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirements include farm-based experience and a BS or MS degree or equivalent in horticulture with special attention to commercial vegetable or fruit production; or in pest management or soils management with special attention to sustainable or organic vegetable and fruit production. Understanding and experience working with USDA organic regulations is preferred.
Job duties:
• Work directly with farmers and farm groups to provide technical information on the sustainable or organic production and marketing of vegetable and fruit crops
• Provide information and support to farmers transitioning to organic production
• Write publications, topical summaries, bibliographies, workshop materials and website information on a variety of horticulture and agronomy topics while targeting a variety of audiences with varying degrees of technical expertise or knowledge
• Communicate via email, telephone, and in person to gather and disseminate information
• Assist farmers with product marketing, including providing information on farmers’ markets and local food systems
• Work with other sustainable agriculture specialists to identify farmer needs and appropriate delivery methods
• Assist in project-development activities
• May attend conferences, workshops, seminars, and related events in support of project duties
Req. candidate profile :
NCAT is a mission driven organization and the successful candidate must be fully supportive of its mission. Demonstrated interest and knowledge in promoting sustainable agriculture and organic production is required. Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, writing and proposal development are very important in this position.
