Just Food is a NYC non-profit organization that addresses regional farm and food issues. We work to build a more just food system. This means, for example, that family farmers make a fair profit for their efforts, and all people have access to affordable, healthy, culturally appropriate food.
Responsibilities:
Work with up to 12 market garden sites to improve garden design, encourage record keeping, and develop crop plans for increased market production
Organize food production workshops based on needs of market gardeners
Develop a network of market gardeners to share production skills and products for sale at markets, including honey and eggs
Assist with food production and harvest at market garden sites as appropriate
Recruit new gardeners to sell at current markets and to start new markets
Research opportunities for market gardeners to create value added products in institutional kitchens
Research insurance for craft vendors to increase the number of community-based vendors at markets
Assist groups to share and develop comprehensive record keeping models, including harvest records
Promotion of EBT/Food Stamps and FMNP to increase sales of urban products at markets
Req. candidate profile :
Qualifications:
Dedication to issues related to farming, food, nutrition, and economic development;
Hands on agricultural experience;
Working knowledge of Spanish strongly recommended;
Ability to work well in teams with diverse groups across race, class and urban/rural divides and a desire to work with low-income community members and experience in doing so;
Intern or volunteer experience and/or experience supervising other interns or volunteers;
Strong interpersonal communication, writing, editing, research, and organizational skills;
Capacity for collaborative project development;
Strong public speaking, participatory facilitation and organizing skills;
Be flexible with a great sense of humor;
Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Internet research
