Principal Responsibilities:
- Lead campaign strategy planning for Marine Vessel Campaign, working with Regional Program Director to ensure strong, achievable objectives, winnable victories, and sustained funding for supporting full campaign work, consultants and campaign expenses.
- Work with FoE Clean Vessels Consultant and other consultants conducting air studies and regional work to meet goals in existing workplan for fiscal 2008.
- Implement all aspects of campaign and collaborate where valuable to create complementary efforts with other Friends of the Earth teams and/or colleagues as appropriate.
- Produce yearly workplan and budget and participate in team and organization-wide strategic planning.
- Coordinate with the Director of Development and West Coast Operations, other Friends of the Earth staff including the Press Secretary, Field Organizer, and Legislative Director in the Washington, D.C main office as needed to advance campaign funding, legislation, and public education about the issues.
- Manage pro bono legal consultants conducting marine vessel lawsuits and acquire legal help as needed for other petitions, lawsuits and appropriate legal activity.
- Conduct research, maintain state of the art knowledge of marine vessel issues and impacts, serve as spokesperson on marine issues.
- Evaluate scientific evidence presented by opposition parties and others and provide testimony designed to move marine vessel operations in the direction of cleaner technology and sustainable practices.
- Develop and maintain relationships with appropriate decision makers, agencies, environmental and public health groups, and coalitions as needed to mount effective public campaigns.
- Produce and disseminate high-quality campaign-related public and decisionmaker education materials.
- Organize coalitions, grassroots efforts, and pressure campaigns as appropriate to win campaign goals.
- Supervise and, in some cases, conduct lobbying and organizing as needed for passage of state and national legislation.
- Travel within the U.S. and abroad as needed to implement marine vessel initiatives and achieve better state, national and international standards, working with the International Maritime Organization and FoE colleagues in Europe.
- Team with Regional Program Director and Development Director to ensure foundation funding for campaigns, developing strong project proposals and providing expert information as needed to funders.

Additional Qualifications:
- BA or BS degree or equivalent experience in relevant field, graduate degree preferred. Science, marine background and/or related degree are a plus.
- Knowledge of marine, environmental, transportation and/or energy issues
- Minimum of three years of organizing and/or nonprofit campaign development experience
- Minimum of three years of experience with government agencies, legislation, governmental change processes and public engagement processes
- Excellent writing skills and exacting attention to detail
- Superb organizational skills and excellent verbal communications skills
- Excellent computer and research skills
- Demonstrated work ethic and ability to enjoy working with a smart, creative and enthusiastic team.
