Job description: Room to Read’s mission is to provide under-privileged children with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. The organization was founded on the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and taking control of one’s own life.

The Senior Development Director is responsible for developing and implementing a program for the cultivation, stewardship and solicitation of major gifts from individuals and family foundations in support of current and future capital needs at Room to Read. The individual will also be responsible for a portfolio of donors residing in the western US and Canada

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan for high net worth individuals and family foundations capable of making gifts of $50,000+ annually.
  • Drive the strategy and direction around the cultivation, stewardship and solicitation of major donor prospects supporting Room to Read’s first-ever fundraising campaign which will be launch in early 2008 with the goal of raising $50MM over three years.
  • Source and maintain relationships with donors in the western US (excluding the Bay Area), primarily individuals and family foundations with a goal of $2MM+ annually.
  • Lead and manage the individual gifts team including budgeting input, fundraising program direction, supervision, and evaluation of assigned staff (4-5 staff members in total).
  • Develop strategies and approaches to generate different levels of giving, and implement a moves management approach to bring individuals and family foundations up the ladder of giving.
  • Ensure that all major donors receive appropriate, consistent recognition and an accounting of the impact that their gift has on community needs annually.
  • Develop an annual communication plan for the individual donor base including regular mail and email communication, and a strategy for annual direct mail appeals.
  • Represent Room to Read at fundraising events and in donor cultivation meetings.
  • Make risk analysis and balance time-cost ratios to ensure Room to Read chooses the most appropriate fundraising activities with the highest chance of success.
  • Monitor income and expenditure against the budget allocated and the target that has been determined.
  • Work with donors, staff, and board members to identify and qualify prospects who will lead to major gifts.
  • Manage the donor acknowledgement program and develop appropriate follow-up strategy.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Req. candidate profile : Required:
  • Minimum of 8 years combined leadership and major gift fundraising experience including three to five years in a senior management capacity with a non-profit organization
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute major gift activities
  • Positive initiative and mature judgment
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to motivate and encourage people to be involved in the major gift cultivation and solicitation process
  • Ability to ask for and close gifts of $100,000 and above
  • Computer literate, with experience in word, excel and Raiser’s Edge a plus
  • Able to lead and motivate groups and individuals
  • Able to balance competing priorities, complex situations and tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills in English.
  • Ability to listen is essential.
  • Able to ask leading questions that encourage prospects and donors to talk about themselves and their activities.
  • Ability to frequently travel within the western US and Canada (with a focus on Vancouver, Seattle, the Rockies, and southern California)
  • Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people
  • Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States; no sponsorship provided
