Job description
Job description: BIENESTAR is a leading community service and advocacy organization. It is the largest Latino community-based organization in the United States that meets the social services, health education and prevention needs of Latino men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, and those most at risk of HIV, sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) and other infections. BIENESTAR accomplishes this through community education, prevention, mobilization, advocacy, and the provision of direct social support services.

Under the direction of the Director of Public Affairs, the Grant Writer assists with the development of the strategy, structure, and priorities for government, foundation, and corporate grant seeking activities. Organizes and manages BIENESTAR’s grant seeking activities by writing funding proposals and reports for government, foundation, and corporate grants. The Grant Writer works in collaboration with management and program staff to achieve resource development goals.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research, develop and identify foundation, corporate, and government grant opportunities; maintain and organize grants calendar.
  • Discuss funding opportunities with management and assists in making determination of what opportunities will be pursued, how much will be requested, and what programs Bienestar will propose to the prospective funders.
  • Write and compile proposals, letters, and other documentation necessary to apply for grants. Work in collaboration with program staff and management during the grant proposal development phase. Ensure that all proposals are submitted before the deadlines.
  • Prepare grant budgets, and secure budget approval from the program staff and management. Secure all necessary attachments, letters of support, and additional documentation to accompany proposals.
  • Maintain a database and calendar of all prospective funders including deadlines for proposal submissions and reports.
  • Acquire and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of BIENESTAR’s current and potential programs, of the impact of these programs, and of the needs of people and constituents served by BIENESTAR.
  • Write and/or assist in writing reports to funders. Ensures that all reports are submitted in a timely manner.
  • On occasion, collaborate with freelance grant writers to prepare submissions or reports.
  • Track all requests and ensures that appropriate follow-up is conducted. Prepare for site visits. Maintain all grant files. Ensure that all grants received are appropriately acknowledged.
  • Develop relationships with government, foundation, and corporate representatives. Assist and coordinate the activities of the President & CEO, Board, and staff in the solicitation and stewardship of grant donors.
  • Stay informed of significant trends in government, foundation, and corporate funding, and of specific priorities and activities of current and prospective funders.
  • Write other fundraising and communications material, as requested. Assist in other fundraising activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Req. candidate profile : Educational Requirements:

Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Business, Journalism, and/or combination of training and experience desired which would provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform job duties.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of two years of grants development experience for a non-profit organization.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Excellent research skills, including Internet research skills.
  • The ability to manage and coordinate many projects simultaneously. Flexibility and creativity.
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, goals and priorities of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with men and women of diverse races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment.
  • Fluency in Spanish desired, but not required.
