Job description
Job description: Freedom House is an independent non-governmental organization that supports the expansion of freedom in the world. Freedom House functions as a catalyst for freedom through its analysis, advocacy and action. We currently seek a Director to act as the main representative of the organization’s Europe hub office based in Budapest. The Europe Director will oversee Freedom House Europe’s advocacy, programmatic, and analytical work.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Advocacy:
  • Lead organization’s initiatives to advance human rights and democracy by influencing European policy makers and opinion leaders. Support ongoing advocacy through contribution to Freedom House publications, articles, and other releases.
  • Develop and implement, in consultation with Washington based program, an advocacy strategy targeting European governments, inter-governmental and international organizations, and other relevant audiences.

Program:
  • Conceptualize and design strategies for ongoing and future programs.
  • Ensure close integration of programs with ongoing Freedom House activities in the region.
  • Coordinate responses to requests from funders, governmental organizations, and other initiatives seeking information on programs.
  • Lead monitoring and evaluation of Freedom House programs, performance of program grantees, and staff.
  • Ensure timely completion of reports and workplans and compliance with other provisions.

Other Duties:
  • Work with Director of Development to oversee overall fundraising strategy, maintain existing partnerships, and build new relationships with donors and potential funders.
  • Oversee financial management, sub-grant management, staff supervision, program evaluation, and other day-to-day activities of the Budapest office.
  • Ensure compliance with Hungarian laws relating to NGO’s, employment practices, financial management, and reporting. Act as liaison with Hungarian government officials.
Req. candidate profile : Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Master’s degree in international relations, political science, or related field required.
  • At least 5 years experience in democracy promotion, human rights, and good governance related programming and advocacy work.
  • Extensive knowledge of democracy, human rights, and issue advocacy in Europe.
  • Knowledge of Central and Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union.
  • Knowledge of European funding sources and program management.
  • Excellent ability in writing proposals, reports, and press releases.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Good working knowledge of at least one additional and relevant language required.
