The Financial Clinic is a nonprofit, financial development organization—its mission is to improve the economic security of low-income New Yorkers. The Clinic combines “low bono” legal and advocacy services with financial counseling and planning to help working poor families literally make ends meet.
Responsibilities:
In partnership with the United Way of New York City, the Clinic aims to combine free tax preparation services with financial coaching: financial education and planning that helps EITC-eligible families move towards economic security. Volunteer coaches will prepare tax returns for filers and then introduce them to a range of financial health indicators—goals, safety nets and assets, banking, debt management, credit, and goals—that together build economic security. Our purpose is to begin to create a year-round relationship with tax filers and their communities.
Req. candidate profile :
As these services are free, the Clinic relies on volunteers from the community to be trained as volunteer financial coaches and tax preparers.
Qualifications include:
High degree of interest in helping low-income working families secure work supports, reduce debt, improve creditworthiness, foster savings habits, and address tax and consumer credit issues;
Commitment to volunteering at least one four-hour shift a week throughout the tax season, and perhaps beyond the tax season;
Familiarity and comfort with computers;
Ability to pass a self-guided, online IRS test and an eight-hour classroom training that takes place a weekend in January.
