Step Up Women’s Network is a national non-profit membership organization dedicated to strengthening community resources for women and girls. Through hands-on community service, mentoring and fundraising for women’s health and critical issues, we educate and activate our membership to ensure that women and girls have the tools they need to create a better future.
Under the Program Manager’s supervision, the Photography Instructor will manage the overall operations of the Step Up Photography Program, a program serving up to 25 middle/high school age underserved girls from The Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem, New York. The Instructor is accountable to ensure that the program, meeting one day per week on afterschool weekdays, is implemented based upon Step Up curriculum, policies, and vision.
Duties and responsibilities include:
- In collaboration with teacher, create project outline and class curriculum.
- Instruct participants about photography topics as outlined in the approved Step Up curriculum.
- Liaise between Teen Programs Manager and The Young Women’s Leadership School; Communicate with Teen Programs Manager and school staff about any schedule modifications or important behavioral or environmental issues.
- Model appropriate communication with families, teachers, staff and girls.
- Track attendance, performance and behavior (positive and negative) through accurate record keeping.
- Collaborate with school staff to collect report cards, diplomas, and relevant test scores.
- Assist in the planning of a semester-end showcase event.
- Write a program narrative report at the conclusion of the program.
- Analyze performance metrics; Collect any documentation related to participants’ family income, ethnicity or other information required by funding sources.
- Assist in ensuring that Step Up branding is consistent across program sites.
- Provide crisis intervention services when necessary.
- Assist in the recruitment of new, and retention of existing, girls into Step Up programs.

Qualifications:
Ideally, candidates will have at least two years experience working with youth in ethnically diverse and underserved communities, and an educational background in the area of photography.
Candidates should meet the following additional criteria:
- Undergraduate degree or other study in photography or related subjects.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to deliver quality, professional work.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Teaching experience is preferred.
- Strong organizational skills. Experience in management of programs and persons are preferred.
- Self-starter and fast-learner who does not require heavy supervision and copes well with change.
- Ability to work life skills, community building, relationship skills, self-esteem and life lessons into movie-making focused programming.
- Ability to travel to multiple sites throughout the greater New York area.
- Passion for women’s social issues and interest in providing quality educational, enriching experiences to girls.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and the Internet.
