Job description
Job description: The SVP will provide strategic guidance, direction and implementation oversight as GLAAD continues to advance, grow and strengthen as the lgbt movement’s media advocacy and anti-defamation organization.

The SVP will be engaged with organizational review and direction setting, public speaking, fundraising events, external relations, program oversight and direction and become the leader for mission critical issues; including highly visible issues that relate to the work of the organization. This person will represent the organization to some external lgbt and allied partners, and play a key role in day-to-day staff leadership and development.

This position will bring added executive level capacity to an already thriving and advancing senior leadership team, support and encourage presidential leadership and direction for the organization and truly be one to stretch and push GLAAD to new heights of success with our mission of ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of LGBT people and events in the media as a means of eliminating hatred and bigotry based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve and support the President with creating and strengthening new and existing initiatives to advance the organization
  • Provide innovative and strategic leadership for planning, executing, and leading organizational units, to be determined
  • Develop and implement strategies to leverage new and long-term support to achieve GLAAD’s ambitious strategic goals and plans
  • Serve as a visible advocate for GLAAD’s mission and programs, the SVP will develop and maintain productive relationships with GLAAD’s multiple constituencies, as well as provide strong leadership and guidance within the organization
Req. candidate profile : Qualifications
  • 8-10+ years of seasoned leadership experience with in the LGBT, academic, non-profit, media, entertainment, public or private sectors or a combination of experience ensuring visible track record of success
  • Style and approach to accomplishing goals that is comfortable serving in “deputy” or “number 2” leadership role within a dynamic organization
  • Ability to work well in a highly collaborative work environment
  • Verifiable track record of success with program planning and supervision, project design and management, including implementation and evaluation, and relationship building
  • Commitment to employee-centered, coaching culture that inspires others to reach their highest potential
  • Knowledge and experience in maintaining sound fiscal policy, including development and oversight of budgets
  • Experience in short and long range planning and program development for a non-profit organization highly preferred
  • Communications, public & media relations, marketing experience in an LGBT or equally progressive organization
  • LGBT media and national mainstream media relationships
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with staff, Board of Directors, constituents, media and the community
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate positively, clearly and professionally to diverse audiences efficiently influencing internal and external customers, as well as key stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel & work evenings and weekends when required
  • Working knowledge and understanding of LGBT and allied political, cultural and social organizations highly desirable
  • Either strong working knowledge of history and issues regarding LGBT advancement and media representation or demonstrated capacity to understand issues quickly and competently
  • Skills necessary to promote and create a more diverse and inclusive environment
  • Passion and drive to make a difference for the equal rights of LGBT Americans
