The Drum Major Institute for Public Policy (DMI) is currently seeking a progressive professional or graduate student with experience in public policy writing and the public policy field to work remotely with 14 DMI Scholars to develop their writing and analytical skills.
DMI Scholars addresses one of the most critical challenges facing the progressive movement today: the lack of a pipeline dedicated to supporting and guiding talented young people into the field of public policy. DMI Scholars identifies progressive college students from underrepresented communities and trains them in the skills necessary to obtain and succeed in entry-level public policy positions.
We are seeking a skilled writing and research coach with experience to develop each Scholar’s skills through individualized feedback and advising. Prior to working with Scholars, the Policy Research and Writing Coach will familiarize himself or herself with each Scholar’s previous work by reviewing the memos they wrote during the Summer Institute.
The responsibilities of the position are as follows:
Develop monthly writing assignments that simulate the type of work an entry-level policy analyst might typically do when working in a think tank, government agency or advocacy organization. The assignments should also reflect Scholars’ policy interests.
Review each Scholar’s completed assignments thoroughly with a policy analysis lens for analytical content and line - edit for grammatical and stylistic corrections and suggestions.
Write comprehensive and critical feedback to each Scholar after reviewing their work.
Advise and support Scholars on memos, essays or statements that they are writing for applications to other policy- related programs.
Facilitate a policy research, analysis & writing workshop for Scholars in Washington, D.C. in January 2008.
Req. candidate profile :
At least 3 years of experience doing public policy research, analysis and writing.
Experience working with college students or teaching/tutoring, preferably in public policy or a related field.
S/he should be able to provide substantive and critical feedback both orally and in written format.
