Futurewise is the only statewide organization in Washington dedicated to ensuring that our state and local governments manage growth responsibly. Futurewise has established an impressive track record on growth management issues as the state’s primary advocate for smart growth policies.
Futurewise, a statewide public interest group working to manage growth and stop sprawl, seeks an energetic and skilled individual to manage its State Policy program. The State Policy Director is responsible for working with legislators and other decision-makers, stakeholders, and Futurewise staff and volunteers to achieve our state policy goals. The State Policy Director will represent Futurewise in Olympia during the legislative session, work with our field staff to activate input on important state decisions, and build coalitions with other organizations and interests to achieve our state policy goals. Beyond the legislative session the Policy Director will be responsible for developing and implementing an off-session lobbying strategy aimed at setting us up for successful future sessions. Our current legislative priorities include reducing global warming through local smart growth solutions and reforming Washington’s vesting laws.
This position requires a commitment to progressive growth management, reducing global warming, affordable housing, transportation choices, community revitalization, and environmental protection. The position also requires advocacy, policy analysisa, public education and legal programs, and the technical support that we provide local groups have become the foundation of good growth management in Washington.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials and decision-makers; increase their support for good growth management.
- Work with Executive Director, Board of Directors and coalition partners to develop and advocate for a policy agenda aimed at strengthening growth management.
- Defend growth management laws from attacks by our opponents.
- Build coalitions with other stakeholders to achieve policy goals.
- Represent Futurewise in Olympia during the Legislative Session; develop and implement an off-session lobbying strategy.
- Coordinate with the Field Director to ensure Futurewise utilizes our local networks to support important state decisions.
- Coordinate with and support the efforts of other conservation and community groups.

Primary Qualifications:
- Experience lobbying elected officials and decisionmakers.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Excellent interpersonal relations skills.
- Flexibility and willingness to work evenings and weekends.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize, manage, and coordinate multiple tasks.
- Ability to think on your feet and sound political judgment.
Secondary Qualifications:
- Media and communications experience.
- Relationships with Washington State Legislators and other State Officials
- Familiarity with the Growth Management Act, land use, transportation, housing, and other growth management issues.
