| Job description: |
Citizen Schools is a leading national education initiative that uniquely mobilizes hundreds of staff and thousands of adult volunteers to help improve student achievement by teaching skill-building apprenticeships after school.
The Finance Specialist will be an integral part of the finance team at Citizen Schools supporting a fast-growing, innovative and diverse organization with a budget of over $18 million per year, 200 full-time and part-time staff, and a strategic plan to grow to 80-100 campuses in 10 regions by 2010. This position is an opportunity to build strong, national financial systems for a growing, entrepreneurial organization, and to master budgeting, accounting and finance. The ideal candidate is comfortable with quantitative analytics, and interested in building expertise in finance. Citizen Schools is willing to invest in a week-long specialized accounting training for candidates who lack that specific background.
The Specialist will ensure the consistency and integrity of Citizen Schools’ daily financial processes - including check processing, deposits and reconciliations - and national and local public grants reporting. The Specialist will also assist with special projects at the discretion of the Finance & Public Grants Manager and the CFO. This is a full time position reporting to the Finance & Public Grants Manager and will work in close partnership with a number of other departments. This position requires basic proficiency in accounting principles and data analysis.
Primary responsibility for critical finance and accounting functions:
- Accounts payable
- Accounts receivable
- Reconciliation of accounts

Budget management:
- Work with Campus Directors (Citizen Schools equivalent of a principal for our after-school programs) to manage $250K budgets
Opportunities to support and grow into additional analytical responsibilities:
- Nationwide, organization-wide budget creation and monitoring, tied to the Balanced Score Card
- Cross-departmental projects
- Special analytical projects, e.g. organization-wide spending trends
- Annual audit
|
| Req. candidate profile : |
- Bachelor’s Degree in an analytic discipline from an accredited college or university preferred
- Outstanding organizational and administrative skills
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
- Strong team orientation and ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required
- Familiarity with Blackbaud/Financial Edge a plus
- Experience with AmeriCorps a plus
- Good sense of humor and enthusiasm
- Embodiment of Citizen Schools values: Pride, Joy, Respect, Courage, Teamwork, Perseverance, and Vision
