Job description
Job description: The San Francisco Organizing Project (SFOP) is seeking an experienced organizer to join our team! SFOP is a non-profit federation of congregations, schools, and community organizations, working to make San Francisco a livable city for working families and seniors. We are part of a national congregation-based, community organizing network called PICO.

A community organizer with SFOP works to find and develop leaders in congregations and schools to improve their communities and San Francisco. This person will join a team of 5 other organizers and report to the Associate Director.

  • Organize in 5 congregations and schools. Complete 20 one-on-one relational meetings every week with community members.
  • Train and develop community leaders from these member institutions to act in the public arena
  • Work with clergy and school leaders to support social justice in their institutions
  • Work with others on team to provide staff leadership for SFOP citywide campaigns for healthcare, housing, education, and violence prevention
  • Participate in PICO national network to move policy at state and national levels

This person will very likely work with a range of institutions, including a school, a synagogue, and churches in low-income and immigrant communities. SFOP has a strong learning culture, including weekly staff development and coaching opportunities, and PICO regional and national trainings. We place a high priority on personal learning, relationship building, and creating a respectful multi-ethnic, multi-faith, and multilingual organization.
Req. candidate profile :
  • BA or AA degree, or equivalent work experience
  • Strong public speaking, writing, and analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal and relational skills and interest in people
  • Disciplined, and able to work effectively in highly unstructured environment
  • Desire to learn and openness to challenge
  • Strong interest in community and social justice issues.
  • Experience working in communities of color
  • Experience working with Jewish synagogues a plus
  • Spanish or Chinese language skills a plus
  • 1-3 years experience in union or congregation-based community organizing strongly preferred.
