Founded in 1994, DC SCORES is the DC area’s only nonprofit organization that uses soccer to inspire literacy, physical health and character development among urban public school children during after school hours. DC SCORES is the flagship program that spawned America SCORES, which oversees 14 affiliate programs located in major urban areas. Together these programs work with thousands of public school students in economically challenged communities, operating boys’ and girls’ soccer leagues, literacy workshops and community service projects.
The SCORES concept is simple: linking literacy to soccer creates an exciting tool for our young people to develop healthy minds and bodies. DC SCORES runs a year-round after school program and full day summer camp. Summer SCORES is our full day summer camp for ages 8-12, running from June 25 – August 3, 2007. There will be two Summer SCORES sites, one in Ward 4 and one in Ward 7, and each site will serve 50 children. DC SCORES is hiring two Summer SCORES Directors, one for each site.
About The Position:
The Summer SCORES Director is a challenging and rewarding position, offering substantial opportunities for creativity and professional growth. This person reports to the Program Director of DC SCORES. Salary: $4,000 stipend. Dates: June 18 – August 7, 2007, with 15 hours of preparation time prior to June. The Summer SCORES Director responsibilities include:
Developing, scheduling, and directing all Summer SCORES activities using DC SCORES' curriculum;
Assisting with hiring Summer SCORES staff (4 people);
Managing and evaluating Summer SCORES staff;
Assisting with the design and implementation of training for Summer SCORES staff prior to camp;
Designing behavior management plans and creating a positive culture for the Summer SCORES site;
Developing a collaborative environment where staff and youth are valued;
Program evaluation of Summer SCORES;
Coaching, supporting, and evaluating all Summer SCORES participants;
Planning and chaperoning field trips and special events.
Qualifications:
Passion for urban education and youth development;
2 years youth development experience;
2 years management experience;
Knowledge of Washington, DC and/or urban public school systems;
Experience in curriculum design and implementation;
Excellent organizational abilities and capacity to manage multiple projects;
Computer literacy and excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Excellent people skills in a diverse environment, and a team player;
Ability to communicate and relate well with children;
Daily access to a car as sites are located around the city;
Bilingual in Spanish a huge plus;
Passion for the sport of soccer a plus.
A TB test (up to 1 year old) and Metropolitan Police Department background check prior to June 1st.
