Shelburne Farms offers several different Work and Learn Opportunities. We have apprenticeships that provide post-college individuals with practical experience and skill development in the fields of environmental and agricultural education, animal care, interpretation, and organic gardening. Apprentices work on a full time, temporary basis (one or two seasons), receive a living expense reimbursement and are provided housing on site. We also offer internships that are designed to allow an individual to receive college credit through their institution while working and learning at Shelburne Farms. An internship can be full or part time lasting for a season or part of a season. Housing and reimbursement not provided. Volunteer positions are also available. |

Education Apprenticeship: Shelburne Farms is seeking motivated post college individuals to teach and assist in the development of agricultural and natural resource education programs for children through adults. Strengthen your teaching techniques, administrative skills, and agricultural and natural history knowledge base while involved with a variety of programs. Apprentices get involved primarily with teaching our preschool and school field trip programs during the school year, and summer camps during the summer months. Qualifications: Apprenticeships are for those individuals out of college with little or no experience and eager to gain new skills and ideas. A degree in environmental studies, education, agriculture or a related field required. This is a seasonal, full time position. (Sept-Dec, Jan-April, or April-Aug with a possibility of extending) On-site housing and living expense reimbursement provided.

Winter Farmyard Apprenticeship: Shelburne Farms is seeking motivated post college individuals to learn new skills and knowledge in the agriculture field by working alongside staff in our Children’s Farmyard. These skills include animal care, lambing, sugaring, and general farmyard maintenance, such as carpentry skills. Responsibilities include: providing animal care and general farmyard maintenance; supporting the sugar maker through set-up and sugaring season (including weekend interpretation and sugaring assistance); supporting the shepherd through lambing prep and lambing season (including chores, interpretation programs, and night checks; Assisting in development of new animal production techniques and helping to teach agricultural programs for general public. Qualifications: Apprenticeships are for those individuals out of college with little or no experience and eager to gain new skills and ideas. Applicants should be enthusiastic about agriculture and animal care, willing to work outside, have an interest in agricultural education, have good communication skills, be flexible, and be able to work weekends. Commit to working full time, including one weekend day (Tues-Sat) from January-April. Weekly hours vary with seasonal fluctuations. Housing on site and living expense reimbursement provided.

Farmyard Interpretation Apprenticeship:
Shelburne Farms is seeking motivated post college individuals to teach and assist in developing agricultural programs for the general public and visiting school groups. Strengthen your knowledge of sustainable agriculture and ecology while leading interpretive programs. Examples of programs include farmyard experiential activities, organic gardening, and wildlife campfires. Additional job responsibilities include farm chores, shuttle wagon tractor driving, special event support, visitor information and general guest services. Qualifications: Apprenticeships are for those individuals out of college with little or no experience and eager to gain new skills and ideas. A degree in agricultural education, environmental studies, education, agriculture or a related field required. A desire to learn more about agriculture, animal care and working with the general public and school groups preferred.
This is a seasonal, full time position from April to October. On-site housing and living expense reimbursement provided.

Organic Garden Apprenticeship: Shelburne Farms is seeking motivated post college individuals to join the Market Garden Team for a season of working alongside a master gardener to gain new skills and knowledge related to organic gardening. We operate a 2-acre market garden that delivers its produce to the restaurant at the Inn at Shelburne Farms. Responsibilities include planting, cultivating, weeding, harvesting, irrigation, operating a rototiller, IPM, transplanting, delivering, seeding, trellising, and meeting informally with the general public. Qualifications: College degree. Desire to learn organic gardening techniques, some gardening experience preferred. Commit to working 45-50 hours a week for a full season, early April-late October. Weekly hours vary with seasonal fluctuations. On-site housing and living expense reimbursement provided.
