Job description
Job description: The General Board of Church and Society is the international public policy arm of the United Methodist Church serving 11.7 million members around the globe. Our digital communications director is part of a two-person communications staff on Capitol Hill with key responsibilities for ensuring a high-quality, dynamic, ever expanding website presence and e-communication strategy. The successful candidate must be ready to hit the ground running with an array of web authoring skills as well as outstanding interpersonal communication skills. The General Board of Church and Society is implementing a long-term communication plan to recreate its website as part of a “family” of coordinated United Methodist agency sites on a Kintera platform. The ideal candidate will

· be highly self-motivated to quickly learn the Kintera tools

· work with outside consultants to research and validate the strategy and content priorities for recreating the GBCS website

· work both independently and collaboratively with other UMC agency website producers to ensure that content specifications, standards and styles are consistently used in site content.

· Work with Kintera consultants and engineers to resolve site bugs, end-user concerns and questions, staff training needs and other issues related to a successful web communication presence.

· Implement strategic plan for reorganizing web content, creating new web content.

· Demonstrate personal integrity, strong listening skills, and a collegial demeanor.



The Digital Communications Director works under the supervision of the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) for Communications to ensure current, accurate and compelling website content in a CMS environment. He/she implements strategies to increase both its traffic and contact database, maintains close contact with other web producers in the denomination, and keeps a pulse on the digital communication needs of advocacy and education staff of the agency. An ability to quickly learn new technologies is a must.
Job duties: Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:



· Serve as the agency expert on using digital tools to implement the goals and needs of other staff, board members and constituents, including web pages, search tools, forms, bulletin boards, RSS feeds and a wide variety of other web-based features.

· Manage content flow on the site, using template, style sheets, dynamic indexing, segmentation, and personalization.

· Coordinate agency web content with other UMC boards and agencies.

· Ensure timely production and dissemination of weekly e-newsletter with articles submitted by staff.

· Contribute to developing online campaigns that address agency goals and target audiences.

· Contribute to ongoing development of website and content management system.

· Provide support and training for staff and external contributors to the site in using the Kintera web-based tools.

· Resolve questions, bugs and conflicts relating to the performance of the website and content management system.

· Implement new online features with website agency, including streaming media, blogging, collaboration tools and other emerging technologies as they become available.

· Research and acquire images and clips from outside providers.

· Assist the AGS for Communications in proofing and approving content for publication to the website on tight deadline.

· Provide audio visual support for GBCS, GBCS board meetings and General Conference.

· Travel required.
Req. candidate profile : Skills and Experience

· Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively with a racially, culturally, technologically diverse staff in a fast-past challenging environment.

· Experience in Website production, ideally in a CMS environment.

· Expertise in writing CSS, HTML, JavaScript and Jpeg images. Flash and/or Swish scripting experience desirable.

· Solid project management skills; able to work independently on multiple assignments and meet deadlines while maintaining quality standards.

· Ability to stay focused on agency priorities and strategic plan in the midst of other pressing demands and interruptions.

· Photoshop and graphics skills preferable.

· Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or Web Editing desirable.

· Knowledge and experience in religious communications preferred

· Goal and results-oriented; an ability to let go of what doesn’t work and courage to try something new

· Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

· Ability to theologically articulate the agency mission and ministry to the church and the world in words, stories and images.
