The Lab-On-a-Chip Application Development (LOCAD) Scientist provides scientific and technical guidance to the Space Systems Program & Projects Office for the LOCAD project. Support includes serving as scientist responsible for the research and development of goals and objectives of the project, serving as science advisor for ongoing work, and assisting with identification of new areas of research that are applicable to the project’s goals. Support also includes establishing and maintaining collaborative efforts, serving as science liaison to the project’s external customers, proposal writing, supervising proposal research efforts, writing and releasing publications resulting from research efforts, compiling final reports for customers, attending conferences, presenting data and results, and presenting information regarding the project to potential customers or interested parties. In addition, personnel will design laboratory experiments, perform and analyze results, and design, build, and test new hardware for next generation instruments.

Education, Training & Experience
PhD or MS level background in molecular biology or a related science field from an ABET accredited institution is required. Candidate must have experience in laboratory experimental design and data analysis, as well as experience in technical writing. Experience in proposal development is desired. Candidate must be a motivated self starter with excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working both independently and closely with others in a team environment. Excellent written, communication, and speaking skills are required.
Physical Requirements
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write perform assigned duties (80%). Requires ability to walk between floors and buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%). Stairs or elevators can gain access.
Work Environment
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate, and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance
Normal workday is from 7:30a.m. to 4:30p.m., Monday through Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and exercise good judgment (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
