The Department of Child Development's mission is to teach future professionals how to prepare children and families to meet the challenges of life in a complex and changing world. The faculty is dedicated to providing student-centered instruction that integrates academics, practice, technology, and service with an emphasis on experiential learning.
Professional Duties:
The primary professional Responsibilities of instructional faculty members are:
Teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the University, profession, and to the community.
Faculty members have additional Responsibilities such as:
Advising students, participating in campus and systemwide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions. Dedication to excellence in teaching is a long-standing tradition at Humboldt State University and is the primary criterion in promotion and tenure considerations. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. Child Development faculty also work collaboratively with the Child Development Lab.

Professional Qualifications:
A Ph.D. or equivalent in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Developmental Psychology, or closely related discipline from an accredited college or university is preferred at time of appointment. ABDs with considerable progress towards degree completion by appointment date will be considered. Completion of the terminal degree is required prior to the start of the subsequent probationary year. Individuals specializing in education must have early childhood classroom teaching experience. Preference will be given to applicants with early childhood special education or American Indian Education background. Evidence of degree(s) required at time of hire.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
- Interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses to students with diverse backgrounds and interests (e.g., majors, general education students, etc.) in one of the following areas: Child Development within an educational context (Pre-K through 8th grade) or Child Development within diverse family and social contexts.
- Ability and interest in preparing individuals to function in a culturally and ethnically diverse society.
- Potential for or record of research, scholarly and/or creative activity involving students whenever possible.
